2012 RELEASE

Exposição Fronteiras apresentará o rico universo da produção artesanal brasileira, em Milão.

The Fronteiras Exhibit will present the rich universe of Brazilian artisanal production in Milan. Named Fronteiras, the exhibit organized by Casa Claudia magazine in Milan will showcase a selection of pieces by Brazilian artisans and designers from different fields of knowledge, such as art, fashion, crafts and design. “The idea is to show curious, poetic pieces, that attract the interest of people even if they don’t understand exactly why. All, however, in tune with our roots,” declared Pedro Ariel Santana, curator of the exhibit and editorial manager at Editora Abril, the country’s largest magazine publisher.

The guest designers include Caio Medeiros and Daniela Menezes, from Estúdio Manus, in Sao Paulo, with a production that contemplates play and poetry much more than function. Fragments and materials gathered on trips around the world are the raw materials for their art objects, displayed on glass cases. On the hands of this creative duo, a Japanese doll can become a light fixture; and drawings from an old botany book, stamps to decorate plates and trays.

Also from São Paulo, designer Marcelo Rosembaum will show, for the first time, the Straw Den and Rubber Den collections, results from his project A Gente Transforma, working with and training artisans from Várzea Queimada, Piauí, one of the country’s poorest regions. The carnauba straw, palm plant used by the women to make utility objects since the arrival of the first Portuguese colonizers in Brazil, resulted in baskets, trays, masks and mats. In turn, the rubber used by the men to make sandals was turned into fruit necklaces, key chains and fruit bowls.

Designer and creative director Renato Imbroisi, from Rio de Janeiro, will showcase a small sample of his work, developed for more than 30 years with artisans in the five regions of the country, with different manual techniques, including basketry, embroidery, crochet, lace and weaving. Pieces that are sure to appeal to the demanding public that attends the world’s most famous design week.

Fronteiras will be Casa Claudia’s third consecutive event at Brazil S/A, a networking space for companies and professionals in the areas of design, architecture, interior design and artisanship, who seek to strengthen their image and drive new business, disseminating their products and services. Last year, the magazine organized, in the same 17th-century palace, the Modern Brazilian Architects and Designers exhibit, a tribute to some icons of our architecture and design. With scenography signed by architect Isabela Vecci, from Minas Gerais, the exhibit will use Re-board panels from Art Work, as it did last year, and they will be donated to a recycling station in Milan at the end of the event.
